Today I have an incredible discussion with Sensei Masato Kawahatsu. He is Reverend at the Konko Church in San Francisco, CA. He got his black belt in judo when the training was hardcore. Once time after avoiding class, his teacher and students came to grab him from his home (where he was hiding in his bedroom closet!).
The Konko Church (Konko-kyo) is a Japanese religion founded in 1859 by farmer Kawate Bunjiro, who was said to receive revelations from a universal deity called Tenchi Kane no Kami ("Golden God of Heaven and Earth"). Unlike traditional Japanese polytheism, Konko-kyo centers on monotheistic worship and emphasizes a unique divine-human partnership.
There are approximately 450,000 adherents primarily in Japan and some international presence (like here in San Francisco, CA). Konko-kyo represents one of Japan's earliest indigenous monotheistic faith that integrates traditional Japanese values with accessible spiritual practices emphasizing gratitude, egalitarianism, and the integration of faith into daily work and family life.
Sensei Kawahatsu joins me to talk about various keys he has used to help many people overcome depression, and stay rooted in authentic joy. We talk about how despite massive unexpected setbacks in life, gratitude has been the cornerstone of his incredible journey. You will learn a lot from this one. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.
