I’m sorry I took so long to post. I got sick. Nothing major, just your flu like symptoms. But I hardly ever get sick. I never caught covid, despite flying back and forth to the UK since the pandemic. Anyway, once in a while, I get a fever or fall out. But this was super sudden and hit me early in the morning on Friday.
I juice and tea fasted (soursop leaf tea and cats claw- always ask your Dr. before trying) and took natural anti-inflammatory things like black seed oil and shilajit, plus colostrom and I beat it in under 24 hours. I thought it was all good. So, I went to a BJJ tournament on Sat- all day. Then I went and hung with my family on Sunday.
By Monday night, not taking a rest had basically ruined me. I was a wreck top to bottom. I been in bed almost all day before teaching BJJ just to get by.
I say all of that to say, I’m sorry. Also, I wanted to say that my new audio equipment is finally properly up and running to Bishop Chronicles will have a new format.
Going forward Bishop Chronicles will be a mix of Stoic audio posts that exclusively deal with stoic philosophies, practices and their complexities. There will be other talks that connect stoic concepts with Taoist, Confucian, Sufi, and Kemetic ideas. I will also talk about some of the conversations from the Resilient Men’s Group (RMG) that I host online. Message me to join.
The other convos will be video interviews like this one that deal with BJJ, philosophy and the philosophies of those who teach the sport. I’m trying to have deeper conversations about how we learn what we know and the best practices to making people not only better fighters- but better humans.
Look for the first of the new pure stoic audio episodes to drop NEXT WEEK. Buckle that azz up.
But right now, check out this incredibly honest conversation with Prof. Ryan Rich of Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu. He and I became friends a year or two before the pandemic. As time went on despite getting his black belt under Charles Gracie (the man who gave me my blue belt!) he has shifted his school to almost 100% ecological format.
So what is Eco-BJJ? Ecological Jiu-Jitsu, also known as eco-BJJ, is a training approach that emphasizes learning through experience and adaptation within a dynamic, constraint-based environment, rather than through traditional, step-by-step instruction. It was pioneered by Greg Souders, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt and academy owner. Souders' approach focuses on creating scenarios where students can naturally discover techniques through live training with specific goals and constraints.
Over the last few episodes you have heard me talk about various teaching methodologies with Prof. Ralek Gracie and Prof. Adem Redzovic among others. I don’t think there is a better person I could talk to on the west coast than Prof. Ryan Rich. He breaks down the history of it and how it altered his understanding how how we learn not just BJJ, but anything.
Then we talk through a few things like “How do we know a person is ready for a BJJ belt? Didn’t the first games ever seen come from Helio Gracie? and “So are we supposed to let go of everything we used to do?” + more! He also just created a NEW site BJJ Games, to help those seeking to learn more understand the process more deeply.
This podcast and this specific episode are about much more than jiu-jitsu. It’s a deep conversation about legacy, the preservation or abandoning of that legacy and how to we evolve the art if we don’t evolve out methods of learning.
